Pheu Thai party asked to scrap its plan for public to vote online to oust PM

Thailand’s opposition Pheu Thai party has been asked to reconsider its plan to invite members of the public to cast their votes, via a website, during or at the end of the opposition’s no confidence debate against Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and five ministers, due to take place in parliament from August 31st to September 3rd.

Government spokesman Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana said today (Thursday) that a censure debate is a mechanism for opposition parties to keep a check on the government, but urging people to vote against the government is not, adding that, if the opposition has valid evidence of alleged wrongdoings by the government or any ministers, there are other legal channels through which they can proceed to take action.

Besides the prime minister, the opposition is to target Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob, Agriculture Minister Chalermchai Sri-on, Labour Minister Suchart Chomklin and Digital Economy and Society Minister Chaiwut Thanakamanusorn.

Meanwhile, Mr. Seksakol Atthawong, vice minister attached to PM’s Office, accused the Pheu Thai party of using contemptuous language when attacking the prime minister in its written censure motion and of resorting to dirty tactics against the government, citing the signature collection campaign to oust the prime minister.

He also threatened to invoke lèse majesté charges against any opposition MPs who refer to the monarchy in a disrespectful way.

The Pheu Thai party’s secretary-general Prasert Chanthornruangthong, said today that the party’s MPs will prove its allegation, that this government is “arrogant and power hungry” in the centralisation of the management of the COVID-19 pandemic and procurement of vaccines, among others.

He said that the censure debate will lead to a change of government, as he urged members of the public to vote against the government, in parallel with the vote in parliament.

U.S., China accuse each other of “bullying” nations

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said the US should stop disrupt in “regional peace and stability” after U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday (August 25) again charged China with bullying its Southeast Asian neighbors.

Earlier on Wednesday, Chinese state media accused Harris of seeking to drive a wedge between China and Southeast Asian nations with comments in Singapore that Beijing used coercion and intimidation to back its unlawful the South China Sea claims.

“The United States has so far refused to join the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, but has claimed to uphold the convention. The United States recklessly intervened in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria, but claimed to be protecting the interests of small countries. If the United States says that it is to maintain its hegemony and its self-interest, I think his words are much more credible. China firmly opposes the deployment of maritime law enforcement forces by the United States in the South China Sea to intervene in regional affairs and disrupt regional peace and stability,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Wand Wenbin.

Speaking in Hanoi on Wednesday, Harris said there was a need to increase pressure on Beijing over its maritime claims.

“We need to find ways to pressure, raise the pressure…on Beijing to abide by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and to challenge, its bullying and excessive maritime claims,” said Harris during a meeting with Vietnamese President Nguyen Xuan Phuc.

China, Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines and Taiwan, lay claim to parts of the South China Sea, which is crossed by vital shipping lanes and contains gas fields and rich fishing grounds.

Philippines approves commercial use of genetically engineered rice

The Philippines said on Wednesday it has approved the commercial propagation of genetically modified Golden Rice after more than a decade of field tests that drew strong opposition from anti-GMO activists.

The Southeast Asian country, which is one of the world’s biggest rice importers, is the first nation to approve the Vitamin A-enriched grain for commercial cultivation, according to the Philippines-based International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), which helped develop Golden Rice.

Formal biosafety approval was issued last month, the Department of Agriculture (DA) and its attached agency, Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice), said in a statement.

“With the biosafety permit, DA-PhilRice has now commenced producing seeds for cultivation, which usually takes 3-4 cropping seasons,” said Ronan Zagado, the government spokesman for the Golden Rice initiative.

Golden Rice will be initially deployed in areas with a high prevalence of Vitamin A deficiency by the third quarter of 2022, before it can become commercially available for public consumption, he told Reuters.

The Philippines had been expected to approve the widespread planting of Golden Rice as early as 2011, but faced public concerns over health risks and opposition from various sectors.

Greenpeace has denounced the approval and called on the agriculture department to reverse the decision.

“The DA needs to ensure that farmers are central in a green and just recovery from the pandemic, and are supported by resilient food and farm systems in the face of the climate emergency,” said Wilhelmina Pelegrina, senior campaigner for Greenpeace Southeast Asia.

PhilRice Executive Director John de Leon, however, allayed health risk concerns.

“We have generated extensive data on the safety (of Golden Rice) in terms of national and international safety standards,” he said.

Golden Rice has received food safety approvals from regulators in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the United States, and is undergoing final regulatory review in Bangladesh, according to IRRI.

Bangkok City Hall to launch mobile vaccination services next week

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will launch its mobile vaccination service next week, to provide free inoculations to people living in various communities in the capital, said Pol Cpt Pongsakorn Kwanmuang, spokesman for the city’s administration, yesterday (Wednesday).

A fleet of blue buses, which has been converted into mobile vaccination units, was unveiled to the media yesterday. Each vehicle is fitted out with medical equipment, including a fridge for the storage of vaccines, first aid kits, stretchers, a portable automated external defibrillator (AED).

Each bus will be staffed by a doctor, nurses and other health officials.

Pongsakorn said the BMA will vaccinate as many people it can as quickly as possible, adding that the buses will visit COVID-19 high-risk areas in Bangkok as soon as it receives the vaccines from the Ministry of Public Health.

He said mobile vaccination units have been deployed in several Asian countries, such as China and Vietnam, and the BMA has adopted the idea for implementation in Bangkok, which will offer convenience to many people who have problems of travelling or who cannot go to the vaccination centres on week days.

Farming together: A farmer in Phetchaburi offers a farm-sharing experience to casual gardeners

Love growing plants, but don’t have enough time or sufficient space?

Fret not. Today, you can rent a piece of land, an 8-square-meter garden plot to be precise, and grow what you want to eat at home. The farmers will look after your garden – including watering and adding 2-4 inches of organic manure or organic fertilizer around your plants.

“You can visit your vegetable plot and harvest the vegetables by yourself. If you don’t have time, we will do it for you then send the package to your front door,” Buarawong De Groot, co-owner of U-Farm in Phetchaburi province, 168 kilometers south of Bangkok, tells Thai PBS World.

Buarawong, or Bua, rents out plots to casual and hobby gardeners. Her customers include doctors, male and female cooks, and food stylists, all of them health conscious.

Getting out of the city

Bua and her husband Lex bought a seven-rai (three-acre) plot of land in Ban Lat, Phetchaburi, after having two children, Luca and Chole. The aim was to cultivate chemical-free veggies for the family to eat.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought their plan to fruition far more quickly than they could have imagined and it wasn’t long before they were saying goodbye to the city.

“After the pandemic struck, I left my job as a corporate lawyer. We moved from our home in Bangkok to our farm in Phetchaburi,” Bua says.

Bua says she started out wanting to grow organic and chemical-free vegetables for supermarkets that sell chemical-free vegetables and other farm produce. But her offers were turned down since the supermarkets only deal with contract farmers.

So she turned to those like her – mums, dads, gardener wannabes, and teachers, none of whom trust the safety of vegetables available in the markets and who want to grow their own organic produce but cannot afford to do so.

Sixty 2 by 4 meter plots have been developed for a three-month (one harvesting season) lease at a very reasonable fee of Bt3,900. All the plots have been snapped up, and there is a waiting list.

“We can actually expand to a larger number of plots, but we have chosen not to as we might not be able to maintain the gardens and the delivery of quality farm products,” Bua explains.

What can people accomplish on eight square meters of land? An architect can design a small shack, while a mall developer might use it for parking. U-Farm offers three kinds of plants to its customers to grow on their 2 by 4 meters plots.

“Two by four meters is big enough to grow your favorite vegetables,” says Bua. “Within three months, you will have chemical-free vegetables delivered to your door.”

Some like only curly kale on their land while others are happy with morning glory and eggplant.

Greens such as red and green oak lettuce, rocket, and dill are popular choices, as are cabbage, cauliflower, and Chinese kale.

If seeding and growing go wrong, says Bua, U-Farm will replant the vegetables for the customer. And as has become the norm during the pandemic, U-Farm lets the casual gardeners keep track of their growing plants via CCTV.

“Customers want to know where their food comes from,” says Bua.

And just as importantly, these casual gardeners also enjoy a sense of control and pride as they watch their vegetables grow.

“Mix & Match” with Sinovac then AstraZeneca implemented for those 18+

Director of the Emergency Health Hazard Division of Thailand’s Disease Control Department, Dr. Chawetsan Namwat, has announced new vaccination plans.

People aged 18 and over, including those aged 60 and over, those with any of the seven underlying diseases and women who are 12 weeks pregnant, will be inoculated using the Chinese Sinovac vaccine for the first dose and the UK’s AstraZeneca for the second, with three weeks in between doses. In some cases, two doses of AstraZeneca, 12 weeks apart, may be used.

Children, aged between 12 and 18, with any of the seven underlying diseases, and women who are 12 weeks into their pregnancy, will be inoculated with two doses of Pfizer, with three weeks between the doses.

Frontline medical personnel, health officials and those who have been fully vaccinated with Sinovac or Sinopharm, will get either AstraZeneca or the US’s Pfizer as a booster shot.

Medics who have received a first dose of Sinovac, Sinopharm or AstraZeneca, will receive Pfizer as their second dose. The time between the doses will depend on which vaccine they received as their first dose.

Other plans include Sinovac as a first dose and AstraZeneca as a second three weeks later, or two doses of Pfizer three weeks apart or two doses of AstraZeneca 12 weeks apart.

Dr. Chawetsan also revealed that, in neutralizing antibody tests, those inoculated with two doses of Sinovac and one dose of AstraZeneca have the highest immunity levels against the Delta variant (271.17), followed by two doses of AstraZeneca (76.52).

Those inoculated with two doses of Sinovac and one dose of Sinopharm have immunity levels at 61.26, while only two doses of Sinovac have the least (24.31).
