More tourist arrivals in the south since scrapping of “Thailand Pass”

Tourist arrivals at Phuket international airport and at two border crossings in the southern provinces of Songkhla and Yala have increased since yesterday (Friday), when requirement for a “Thailand Pass” was lifted.

Monchai Tanod, general manager of Phuket International Airport, said that the number of arrivals increased to about 9,000 yesterday, up from a daily average of 7,500, with the largest number being from India, followed by Singapore, Australia, Britain and Malaysia.

Meanwhile, the border checkpoint in Sadao district of Songkhla recorded about 5,000 Malaysian arrivals yesterday, with many of them saying that they intend to travel to southern coastal provinces for vacations.

Another border crossing in Betong district of Yala also saw the arrival of about 1,000 Malaysian tourists, returning life to this mountainous retreat, which has been quiet for the two years of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A resort operator in Bang Saphan Noi district of Prachuap Khiri Kan said that tourism related business is picking up gradually, as many Thai tourists are planning to visit the district, especially those paying for snorkelling trips to Talu Island, a popular destination for corals viewing.

He said he expects an increase in tourist arrivals this month, due to its numerous public holidays.

At the at the first Thai-Lao friendship bridge border checkpoint, in Muang district of the north-eastern province of Nong Khai, border crossings between Thailand and the Lao PDR have been increasing steadily since the end of the “Thailand Pass”.

Customs officials say they have increased random searches, to prevent smuggling of contraband.

Covid air war being lost, experts warn, urging mass ventilation

The world is still not using one of its most effective weapons against Covid — properly ventilating public spaces — more than two years into the pandemic, experts warn.

At the moment there is a “fragile, armed peace” with Covid-19, said Antoine Flahault, director of the Institute of Global Health at the University of Geneva.

“In the hopes of stemming the tide of the pandemic and reducing mortality, we need to reduce the level of contamination, which the vaccine cannot do alone,” he told AFP.

“We need a new phase — improving the quality of indoor air.”

Covid-19 is primarily transmitted through the air. It is carried in large droplets or fine aerosols when an infected person breathes — and even more so when they talk, sing or shout.

In a closed off or poorly ventilated room, these aerosols can remain in the air for some time, moving around the space and greatly increasing the risk of infection.

While it is generally accepted that Covid can be transmitted within two metres (6.5 feet) via both droplets and aerosols, there is still no consensus on the importance of long-distance airborne transmission indoors.

A team of researchers from the UK Health Security Agency and the University of Bristol reviewed 18 studies in several countries on airborne transmission.

In research published in the BMJ this week, they found that people can infect each other when they are more than two metres apart.

– Open that window –

We know one thing for sure: if you open a window, or well-ventilate a space, the virus-carrying aerosols dissipate like smoke.

But experts say that nowhere near enough is being done to ventilate public and private spaces across the world.

“On the whole, this is an issue that governments have not yet taken up,” Flahault said.

He called for massively increased funding to ventilate many public spaces, starting with schools, hospitals, public transport, offices, bars and restaurants.

“Just as we knew to filter and treat drinking water” in homes at the beginning of the 1900s, “one can imagine some households will equip themselves with air purifiers and consider opening their windows,” Flahault said.

Only a few countries have announced ventilation plans since the start of the pandemic.

In March the US government called on all building owners and operators, as well as schools and universities, to “adopt key strategies to improve indoor air quality”.

The plan, dubbed the Clean Air in Buildings Challenge, is covered by previously announced Covid funding and also includes a review of existing ventilation, heating and air conditioning systems.

The European Union has not issued any binding statements on improving air quality in light of Covid.

However Belgium has announced a plan to have a carbon dioxide meter situated in all places open to the public. Having such a meter is voluntary until the end of 2024, when it becomes mandatory.

Stephen Griffin of the School of Medicine at Britain’s University of Leeds lamented that the UK had not acted more on ventilation.

“Sadly, the UK has not embraced the opportunity to safeguard its citizens in public spaces, its children in schools, or the longevity of the vaccination programme in this way,” he told the Science Media Centre.

He said that setting minimum safety standards for ventilation in public buildings would also “greatly mitigate the impact of other diseases”.

“Better ventilation also improves cognition by reducing carbon dioxide levels and, along with filtration, can reduce the impact of pollen and other allergies.”

22 migrant workers from Myanmar detained in Songkhla province

A passenger van, crammed with 22 illegal migrant workers from Myanmar, was intercepted by police at a checkpoint on the Asian highway in Rattaphum district of Thailand’s southern province of Songkhla yesterday (Friday).

A second van, believed to be the scout vehicle, was also apprehended by the police at the same checkpoint, along with the driver, identified as Anupong Fuangfoo. Two other vehicles, which were also believed to carry illegal workers from Myanmar, managed to flee the scene.

Anupong is reported to have told police that he was asked by a broker to guide a convoy of three vans, which would pick up Myanmar workers from Prachuap Khiri Khan province to be sent to Songkhla. He claimed that he was offered 15,000 baht as a fee by the unidentified broker.

Sophonwich Chaiming, driver of the van containing about 22 Myanmar workers, claimed that he was also promised 16,000 baht as a fee after the delivery of the workers to Songkhla, province where they would be smuggled across the border into Malaysia.

Police said that the Myanmar workers admitted that they each paid 60,000 baht to a human trafficking gang to be sneaked into Thailand and then to the Thai-Malaysian border .

More rains anticipated for most of Thailand today

More rain is forecast today (Saturday) nationwide, with isolated heavy falls in some areas of the northern, north-eastern, central and eastern regions and western coast of the southern region as a result of a monsoon trough lying across Myanmar and northern Thailand, which is resulting in low pressure cell over the northern Lao PDR, according to the Thai Meteorological Department.

People in those regions have been advised to brace for gusty wind, flash floods and overflows.

Sailors and fishermen have also been warned of rough seas and strong winds, with 2-3 metre high waves in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf and over 3-metre waves in stormy areas. They have been advised to remain on shore until Wednesday.

Provinces which are forecast to see heavy and isolated heavy rain today are Mae Hong Son, Tak, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Lampang, Phayao, Phrae, Nan and Uttaradit in northern region; Loei, Nong Khai, Bung Karn, Udon Thani, Nong Bua Lamphu, Sakhon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Khon Kaen, Kalasin, Mukdahan, Roi-et, Yasothon, Amnat Charoen and Ubon Ratchathani in the Northeast; Kanchanaburi and Ratchaburi in the central region; and Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat; Ranong, Phang-nga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang and Satun.

60% of Bangkok will be hit by rain today.

The Chaba tropical storm was over the South China Sea at 4am this morning, with wind speeds of 110km/h at its centre. It is moving in a north-westerly direction at a speed of 17km/h. It is expected to make landfall in southern China over today and tomorrow, but the storm will have no direct impact on weather conditions in Thailand.

Bridge in Bangkok has its name mysteriously changed

Bangkok’s Dusit district office has ordered an investigation to find out who arbitrarily changed the name of the Pibulsongkram Bridge at Kiak Kai intersection, near the parliament building, to “Tharab Bridge”.

The perpetrators used an acrylic board, bearing the name of Tharab and the year 2565 B.E. (2022), to cover the old name of the bridge, Pibulsongkram, which was built in 2514 B.E (1971) to commemorate Field Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkhram, the late leader of the 1932 revolution.

Dusit district office’s Facebook page said that district’s chief officer, Thanin Niamhom, and his assistant, Sunsern Rueangrit, rushed to the bridge at 12.54pm today (Saturday) after receiving information from people in the district that the name of the bridge had been changed.

Upon seeing the replacement name of the bridge, he ordered officials from the Department of Public Works to remove the acrylic board.

He also instructed officials to check CCTV in and around the area for clues which may lead to the perpetrators.

The name of the bridge was meant to commemorate one of the leaders of the Khana Ratsadon (People’s Party), which also included Pridi Banomyong, who staged the Siamese revolution on June 24th, 1932, to put an end to the absolute monarchy and to replace it with a constitutional democracy.

Tharab is the family name of Phraya Si Sitthisongkhram, aka “Din Tharab”, who was regarded as a royalist soldier who did not join the Khana Ratsadon in the Siamese revolution. Two coups occurred a year after, in April and June, amid infighting in the government over Pridi’s socialist economic plan and a fight against royalist solders, or the Boworadet rebels, led by Prince Boworadet in 1933.

Phraya Si Sitthisongkhram joined the royalist forces, but was shot dead in Saraburi province in 1933.

In 2017, a memorial plaque, to the Khana Ratsadon to celebrate the 1932 revolution embedded at the Royal Plaza, mysteriously went missing and was replaced with a new one.

Thai prime minister downplays Myanmar aircraft entering nation’s airspace

Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha and the Royal Thai Air Force chief on Friday played down a brief incursion by a Burmese fighter jet into the nation’s airspace amid fierce fighting across the border, saying Myanmar and Thailand have “a good relationship.”

Thailand’s air force scrambled two F-16 fighter jets to its northwestern border on Thursday after radar captured a Myanmar air force jet briefly violating Thai airspace during an aerial assault against Karen rebels, according to an air force statement that day. It also said Myanmar helicopters were detected in the area but did not appear to enter Thai airspace.

“[They] admitted it and apologized. No intention, no determination so,” Prayuth said Friday, adding that the jet turned and overshot into Thailand. “We scrambled our aircraft to warn him as standard operating procedure. Today the military envoys have talked, and they apologized.

“It looks like a big deal but it’s up to us to not make a mountain out of a mole hill – we have a good relationship.”

Meanwhile, Thai Air Chief Marshal Napadej Thupatemi said he was irate over the incursion, but it was inadvertent.

“I tell you frankly, like you, I was irate too, perhaps even more than you people. But we have contacted top commanders of Myanmar forces, asking them be mindful about their operation,” he said.

“In air defense, there are three steps – identify friend or foe, intercept, and destroy if necessary,” he said. “Bear in mind, Myanmar is a friend. If a friend inadvertently trespasses our turf and we shoot him dead, that is way too excessive.”

Fierce clashes

The incursion occurred a day after Myanmar’s junta chief, Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, hosted a delegation headed by Lt. Gen. Apichet Suesat of the Royal Thai Army in Myanmar’s capital Naypyidaw for the 34th meeting of the Thailand-Myanmar Regional Border Committee, according to a report by the official Global New Light of Myanmar.

The two sides discussed ways to strengthen cooperation between defense forces and anti-terrorism measures to improve stability along the border, the report said.

Days of fierce clashes between Myanmar’s military and anti-junta forces in Kayin state have left more than a dozen anti-junta fighters dead and several wounded on both sides of the conflict, sources in the region said Thursday.

The fighting began on June 26 when pro-democracy People’s Defense Force (PDF) paramilitaries and fighters with the ethnic Karen National Defense Organization/Karen National Liberation Army (KNDO/KNLA) launched a joint attack on a military outpost near Myawaddy township’s Ukrithta village, according to a report by the pro-military Myawaddy newspaper.

The attack prompted a military retaliation that included artillery fire and airstrikes, and more junta troops were being deployed to the area, the report said. A rebel officer said junta jets were attacking positions in the area “nine or ten times a day.”

About 200 residents of Myanmar fled across the border into Tak province on Wednesday, and two injured Burmese civilians were treated in Phob Phra district, local Thai officials said.

Border communities

Thai border communities have been affected by intermittent fighting in neighboring Myanmar since the 2021 coup, and in previous clashes between rebel groups and the Burmese government.

A Karen source in Tak province’s Mae Sot district said more than 1,000 Karen refugees who fled the current conflict were still in Thailand.

Southeast Asian countries have been criticized for not doing more to pressure Myanmar to return to democracy after the military coup in Feb. 2021 that ousted an elected government, and amid a brutal campaign to suppress protesters and armed opposition to the junta since then.

A “five-point consensus” agreed by the 10-member regional bloc ASEAN in April 2020 to put Myanmar on the road to democracy was never enacted, in part, critics say, because the bloc operates by consensus and includes authoritarian governments that remain friendly with the junta.
