EGAT Partners with South Korea’s KHNP to Explore Small Modular Reactor Power Plant Technology

Bangkok: The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has entered into a partnership with Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Co., Ltd. (KHNP) from South Korea, aiming to study and exchange knowledge on Small Modular Reactor (SMR) power plant technology and to develop the necessary personnel to support the shift towards clean energy sources.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Park Insik, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of International Business at KHNP, and Mr. Tidet Eiamsai, Deputy Governor for Power Plant Development and Renewable Energy at EGAT, formalized this collaboration by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) focused on Nuclear Power Plant Technology. Mr. Park highlighted the long-standing cooperation between South Korea and Thailand in various fields, including nuclear safety and human resource development. The March agreement between the two governments on peaceful nuclear energy cooperation has further strengthened this partnership, marking a significant milestone in nuclear collaboration between the nations. This initiative aligns with the global trend of adopting small nuclear power plants, recognized for their flexibility, environmental benefits, and contribution to energy security.

Mr. Tidet Eiamsai emphasized that the draft Power Development Plan (PDP) prioritizes diversifying energy sources and increasing the share of clean energy. The collaboration with KHNP represents a crucial step towards achieving clean energy goals in Thailand, including EGAT’s and the country’s ambition of reaching carbon neutrality by 2025. The focus will be on studying SMR technology suited to Thailand’s energy system, with EGAT already engaged in preliminary feasibility assessments as part of its ongoing energy transition preparations.

The MOU outlines a framework for both organizations to jointly explore and exchange technical knowledge on SMR technology, assess the feasibility of SMR power plant projects, and share experiences in the energy sector. It also includes plans to develop skilled personnel to support these projects through training and study tours, alongside establishing technical cooperation in various related areas.
