Rayong: PTT Global Chemical Public Company Limited (GC) is advancing its biorefinery capabilities, aiming to enhance the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) while simultaneously developing high-value bio-chemicals and bio-plastics.
According to Thai News Agency, GC President Mr. Tossaporn Boonyapipat stated that GC is pioneering SAF production within the country. Initially, the company plans to produce 6 million liters of SAF annually using used vegetable oil as the primary raw material. Future plans include expanding production to 24 million liters per year by leveraging technology to improve the existing refinery at the Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate in Rayong Province. This approach is expected to be more cost-effective than constructing a new facility. Beyond SAF production, the biorefinery is set to manufacture biochemical products and bioplastics that can substitute fossil raw materials, aligning with market demands and industry sustainability goals.
The initiative involves a co-processing method integrated with the original distillation unit, converting used cooking oil into valuable bio-chemicals and bio-plastics (Bio-Polymers). Commercial production has commenced for three products: Bio-Propylene for packaging, durable plastics, children's toys, and automotive parts; Bio-BD (Bio-Butadiene) for tires and sports shoes; and Bio-PTA (Bio-Purified Terephthalic Acid) for polyester fibers and PET plastic bottles.
Furthermore, GC plans to develop Bio-Naphtha for chemical and plastic production, Bio-PE (Bio-Polyethylene) for plastic bags, films, and food packaging, and Bio-MEG (Bio-Monoethylene Glycol) for polyester fibers and PET bottles in the future. These efforts align with the use of renewable resources, supporting Thailand's circular economy and the BCG (Bio-Circular-Green Economy) economic model. This strategy is part of GC's broader initiative to expand into high-value, low-carbon businesses.
