Participants of the second conference of the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage in Chiang Mai on Sunday observed a 89-second silence as a tribute to the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

In his opening speech, ICID president Saeed Nairizi praised the late King dedication for the development of irrigation with true understanding of the problematic areas and the importance of public’s participation which should serve as a model for the other countries to apply for use.

Hosted by the Thai Ministry of Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives, the conference in Chiangf Mai started on Sunday and will continue until November 12. About 1,200 participants from 60 countries attended the conference to discuss water management, effective irrigation management and food security among others.
