Nine suspects in Ubon Ratchathani shootout nabbed, one more death reported

Police have nine suspects in custody, who were allegedly involved in the shootout in the BIG C car park in the north-eastern province of Ubon Ratchathani last night which has, so far, left three people dead and six injured, as one more of the hospitalised has died.

Police said that one suspect turned himself in to police today (Thursday) and they are trying to persuade him to show them where weapons used in the gunfight were dumped.

Another suspect was apprehended by the police when he checked in to a hospital in Det Udom district for treatment.

National Police Chief Pol Gen Suwat Jangyodsuk has been in the province, at the order of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, to oversee the investigation with an instruction to have all the perpetrators in the shootout apprehended.

Two rival groups, all of them employed as guards at two pubs near the Big C store in Muang district, arranged a meeting at the parking lot late last night to settle a dispute, but negotiation failed and several of the participants drew weapons and opened fire on each other.

Thailand’s gun violence is the second highest in Southeast Asia after the Philippines.
