Pattani: Two pipe bombs were thrown at the Border Patrol Police base in Ban Krue Se early this morning, causing damage but no injuries. The incident took place at the Krue Se base of the Pattani Border Patrol Police Task Force 9223, located in Tambon Tanyong Lulo, Amphoe Mueang, Pattani Province, approximately 200 meters from the Krue Se Mosque. The explosions damaged the base's front area and two streetlights, with shrapnel scattered in the vicinity. Officers have since cordoned off the area to ensure safety. According to Thai News Agency, the investigation revealed that officers were on duty maintaining security when two individuals on a motorcycle approached along the Pattani-Narathiwat road. The pillion rider attempted to throw a pipe bomb at the base, but it was caught in a net set up by the officers and fell in front of the base. A second bomb was thrown, which also got caught in the net. The assailants quickly fled the scene on their motorcycle, and the bombs exploded shortly thereafter, startling nea rby villagers. This morning, officers continue to block off the area while awaiting a bomb squad to clear the scene and a forensic team to gather evidence in an effort to identify the perpetrators. Authorities suspect that local insurgents aiming to instigate ongoing unrest are responsible for the attack. For context, the southern border provinces have experienced ongoing unrest since the beginning of the year. In January 2025, the Southern Situation Monitoring Center recorded 13 incidents of unrest, resulting in 4 deaths and 19 injuries, with bombs used in four of these incidents.
