Strengthening Multicultural Society in the Deep South

The Southern Border Provinces Administrative Center (SBPAC) has proposed a plan to strengthen the multicultural society in the southern border provinces for the 2022 fiscal year.

The plan was discussed at a meeting held recently, with the participation of representatives from the Office of the National Security Council, the Peace Center of the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) Region 4 Forward, cultural offices of the five southern border provinces, and members of other relevant agencies.

It is divided into two parts. The first part involves development in accordance with the potential of each locality. The target areas include 290 subdistricts in Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat, Satun, and Songkhla.

The second part involves development to enhance security and create an environment favorable to co-existence in a multicultural society. In this part, rights and liberties will be promoted to enable local people to lead their lives in accordance with their beliefs, faiths, and identities.

The plan also seeks to provide central areas for local people of all faiths to interact, exchange knowledge and experiences, and carry out activities together. The central areas will promote closer cooperation and build trust between local people and officials. In addition, the development of infrastructure and people’s quality of life will be emphasized.

The southernmost reaches of Thailand make up a multicultural society, with distinctive cultures, diverse beliefs, and unique identities. The Government has been mobilizing efforts for unified operations that will engage all relevant agencies in order to improve the situation in the deep South, which is recognized as a land of cultural variety.
